Safety Month May Be Over But Protecting Your Business Is a Year-Round Priority
Cyberfraud is on the rise, and REALTORS® need to stay one step ahead.

September may have been REALTOR® Safety Month but protecting yourself, your clients and your business should remain a priority every day of the year. As cybercriminals become more sophisticated, particularly with the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI), real estate professionals face new threats that can put transactions, personal information and client funds at risk.
The numbers tell a concerning story.
According to the FBI, Americans lost $275 million to real estate related fraud in 2025. Additionally, the National Association of REALTORS® 2026 Member Profile found that 58% of REALTORS® reported that they or someone in their company experienced fraud or a scam within the past year.
These threats are not limited to large brokerages or high-value transactions. From fraudulent wire instructions and fake property listings to identity theft and AI-generated impersonations, cybercriminals are finding increasingly convincing ways to target real estate professionals and their clients.
A New Resource to Help REALTORS® Stay Protected
In October, NAR launched a new online resource designed to help members recognize potential threats and take action before significant damage occurs.
Available at nar.realtor/fraud, the resource provides practical guidance organized around three important steps: Prevent, Detect and Report.
Prevent: Protect your accounts with multifactor authentication and strong passwords. Independently verify wire instructions and educate clients about common scams. Designated managing brokers should establish fraud response procedures and regularly review them with agents and staff.
Detect: Watch for unusual requests, last-minute changes to payment instructions and suspicious communications. A seller who refuses to verify their identity or communicates exclusively through email or text may warrant additional scrutiny. When something doesn’t seem right, pause and independently verify.
Report: If fraud is suspected, act immediately. Contact your financial institution, designated managing broker and appropriate transaction partners. Report suspected cybercrime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
Additional Tools to Help Protect You and Your Clients
Beyond NAR’s new resource, REALTORS® have access to valuable tools that can help identify potential risks and protect property owners.
FOREWARN: Know Who You’re Working With
FOREWARN provides real estate professionals with an additional layer of safety by allowing them to verify identities and review available public records before meeting with unfamiliar individuals.
This tool can help REALTORS® make more informed decisions when scheduling showings, meeting prospective clients or evaluating potentially suspicious situations.
Members should familiarize themselves with FOREWARN and use it responsibly, consistent with applicable polices.
County Fraud Alert Program: Help Clients Protect Their Property
Property fraud isn’t limited to financial transactions. Criminals may attempt to record fraudulent documents, including deeds, against properties they do not own.
County Recorder Offices offer free Property Fraud Alert Programs that notify registered property owners when documents containing their property information are submitted.
Encourage your buyers, sellers and past clients to check with their County Recorder’s Office and enroll in available alerts. These programs do not prevent fraudulent recordings but they provide an early warning so property owners can investigate suspicious activity.
Make Safety Part of Your Everyday Business
Cybersecurity and personal safety are not one-time conversations. They should be part of your everyday business practices and the guidance you provide clients.
Take a few minutes to review your security procedures, explore FOREWARN and remind clients about property fraud alerts. Share these resources during team meetings, buyer consultations and post-closing follow-ups.
Protecting your business also means helping protect the people who trust you with one of their largest financial investments.
Mainstreet REALTORS® encourages all members to make safety a year-round priority.
